The Dallas Cowboys will debut their new “Arctic Cowboy” alternate helmets when they travel to Tennessee to take on Titans on Thursday Night Football (8:15 p.m. on Amazon Prime).
The Cowboys originally wore a white helmet from their inception in 1960 through the 1964 preseason. It included a simple navy blue star on both sides, two navy blue stripes down the center and a gray facemask.
The white helmet returned from 2004-12 as part of a throwback uniform, which featured a blue jersey with white yoke and blue stars on the shoulders and white pants. Dallas went 7-5 in this look, including 4-3 on Thanksgiving.
The Cowboys reintroduced the white helmet when the NFL scrapped its one-helmet rule this season, wearing the throwback uniform in their 28-20 win over the New York Giants on Thanksgiving.
They then swapped the decals on the white helmet with their their primary logo, which is used on their silver helmets, and swapped the gray facemask for white for tonight’s game in Tennessee.
Dallas will wear the new white helmet design with its all-white Color Rush uniforms, which are effectively the road version of the aforementioned throwback uniforms, with navy blue sleeve caps and stars on the shoulders.
The Cowboys are 4-4 in this uniform since it was introduced in 2015, though it’s only been worn with their standard silver helmet in the past. They’re currently on a three-game losing streak in their Color Rush set, however.
That said, the Cowboys will now become the fourth team to wear three different helmet designs this season, joining the Giants, Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Chargers.
The Giants switched out the decals on their standard blue helmet to complete their Color Rush set and introduced a navy blue helmet as part of their 1980-99 throwback uniforms.
The Bears introduced an orange alternate helmet and swapped the decals on their standard navy blue helmet to complete their 1936 throwback uniforms.
Lastly, the Chargers swap out the decals and facemask on their standard white helmet to match their navy blue Color Rush uniforms and change the decals for their royal blue Color Rush set.
Tennessee, meanwhile, will counter Dallas’ all-white look with all-blue uniforms. The Titans are 1-3 in this combination this season, with their only win coming on the road in 27-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football.
