The Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals will be livin’ large when they meet outdoors next month in Raleigh.
Today, both clubs unveiled the uniforms they’ll be wearing during their 2023 Stadium Series game at Carter-Finley Stadium on the campus of North Carolina State University on the evening of Saturday, February 18.
Both uniforms are in that classic Stadium Series style, with big logos, bright colours, and elements placed where they typically aren’t.
Carolina is wearing black with giant, bright red stripes on the arms and smaller storm grey stripes below. North Carolina’s state flag is on the left shoulder, recoloured storm grey and black (as it is on their usual home sweater) and the 2023 Stadium Series logo is on the right. The Carolina Hurricanes logo, now a quarter-century old, is placed on the chest in a simple black and red colour scheme, stripped of all white. The captain’s “C” is from the team’s “CANES” wordmark logo.
So what’s big? What’s bold? Well, you’ll find that on the sides of the helmet.
On the left side of the bucket is the top half of the black and red version of the ‘Canes jersey logo, and on the right is the player’s number in large red numbers. An additional large element is the Hurricanes storm flag logo on the side of the pants.
Washington counters by wearing white with a massive blue and white version of their secondary “W-eagle” logo, the first time the Caps have featured this popular logo on the front of their uniform. Large red, white, and blue stripes down each sleeve, a single red stripe at the waist.
From the press release: The three bands of colour in the sleeve are a nod to the oversize, three-colour banded hem on the inaugural Capitals’ sweater. The two horizontal laces represent the two red bands on the D.C. flag. The inside neck features the ‘W’ and stars crest from the Capitals’ 2018 NHL Stadium Series jersey.
Like the Hurricanes, the Capitals are wearing large decals on the sides of their helmet. A blue lid with the abbreviated “Caps” version of their primary logo, the other side features the player’s number in white. Three white stars are placed vertically down either side of the pants. The 2023 NHL Stadium Series logo is on the right shoulder.
Washington has already announced the uniform will be worn indoors at their home arena on February 21 against the Detroit Red Wings.
“We are thrilled to unveil the 2023 Stadium Series uniform with the fan-favourite ‘Weagle‘ front and center,” said Hunter Lochmann, Monumental Sports & Entertainment Chief Marketing Officer said in the press release. “The bold design allows the Weagle to take center stage as the focal point of the jersey and set itself apart in the stadium atmosphere. We are excited for our players and fans alike to wear these jerseys and represent the Capitals and D.C., starting with the outdoor game on February 18 before being worn on home ice on February 21.”
The Stadium Series was first played in 2014; it is one of three regularly-held outdoor games hosted by the National Hockey League along with the Heritage Classic — traditionally held between Canadian clubs off-and-on since 2003, and the Winter Classic, played annually since 2008 and featuring American-based teams.
