Fans of Major League Soccer side CF Montréal will have to wait a little longer to see the club’s new primary jerseys.
The club announced on Twitter Friday that they were delaying the release of their new primary jersey, which they were slated to take the pitch in this season.
“We were looking forward to unveiling the new primary jersey for the 2023 season,” the statement reads. “Unfortunately a new jersey will not be available at this time.
“Our team will play with the grey secondary jersey for the time being.”
They went on say that, as part of the rebranding process from Montréal Impact to Club de Foot Montréal in 2021, the club was committed to adding an inscription in an Indigenous language to the 2023 primary jersey.
“The Club is committed to developing lasting and sincere relationships with Indigenous communities,” the statement reads. “As the consultation process is still ongoing, we have decided to pause distribution of the 2023 primary jersey to strengthen our approach by listening, collaborating, and co-creating concrete initiatives with Indigenous communities.”
MLS clubs rotate between releasing a new primary jersey and a new secondary jersey each year. CF Montréal’s current secondary jersey, launched in 2022, consists of a blue marble pattern on a grey base with black trim. This year’s version should feature the new club crest, unveiled in May 2022.
It’s not clear from the statement if the club will unveil a new primary jersey partway through the 2023 season or if it intends to wear the grey secondary jersey all season. It’s possible they could use the black primary jersey released in 2021 if there’s a clash with another team’s colors.
Most MLS clubs have scheduled the release of their new jerseys for 2023 between February 15 and 17. The 2023 MLS season kicks off on February 25; CF Montréal travels to Florida to take on Inter Miami in their opening match.
