Kansas City Royals Will Go Full Powder Blue on Opening Day in 2023

The Kansas City Royals are giving their fans exactly what they wanted in 2023.

That’s right, powder blue pants!

The Royals, who wore powder blue jerseys and pants on the road from 1973 to 1991, brought back powder blue as a home alternate jersey in 2008, but it was paired with white pants. Over the last 15 seasons, the Royals have played around with the design of this powder blue top but have never worn the matching pants with it.

This changes on Opening Day.

“Powder Blues were first introduced in 1973 at the request of Muriel Kauffman. So, to celebrate the 50th anniversary, we’re bringing them back on Opening Day,” explained Sarah Tourville, Senior Vice President – Chief Revenue and Innovation Officer for the Royals, in an email to SportsLogos.Net. “Opening Day, March 30, 2023, will be the first time the Royals have ever worn a ‘full’ powder blue uniform here at home in Kansas City. Previously they were a road uniform.”

As of now, the plan is for the powder blue pants to be worn for just the Opening Day game before switching back to the usual white pants with the powder blue jersey the rest of the way. Though the team has said that there is a slight chance they may bring them back for an encore appearance later in the season.

Kansas City was the last American League club to wear powder blue full-time on the road; they switched to baseball’s traditional grey for 1992 along with the National League’s Montreal Expos. Several notable ball players suited up in the Royals’ powder blue during their playing days, such as George BrettBret SaberhagenKevin AppierGaylord PerryDavid Cone, Harmon Killebrew, and Orlando Cepeda.
