The Brooklyn Nets have partnered with local artist Brian Donnelly, known professionally as KAWS, to create their 2023-24 City Edition uniforms, which were unveiled on Thursday afternoon.
The uniforms – which were designed as part of a two-year partnership with the artist – are inspired by his “Tension” series, blending his abstract painting style with a black, white, gray, teal, blue and red color palette.
The Nets wordmark across the chest of the jersey is influenced by KAWS’ graphic style, as is the remixed Nets logo on the shorts. His signature “XX” design is prominently displayed on the waistband of the shorts, as well.
Lastly, Kaws’ signature is woven into the jersey above the jock tag, while the Webull advertisement patch that appears on all of Brooklyn’s uniforms will continue to be on the left shoulder opposite of a Nike Swoosh.
“As a proud Brooklyn resident, I was thrilled when the Nets asked me to create a new uniform design,” KAWS said. “My design aims to capture the vibrancy that we experience daily when navigating Brooklyn.”
This isn’t the first time the Nets have honored a Brooklyn-based or Brooklyn-born artist, as their 2018-19 and 2019-20 sets were inspired by the Notorious B.I.G.’s Coogi sweaters and their 2020-21 and 2022-23 sets were a tribute to Jean-Michel Basquiat.
“The Brooklyn Nets’ brand transcends the court in many ways, and we are excited to partner with another Brooklyn icon to deepen our connection to the borough with this newest City Edition uniform,” senior vice president of brand marketing, strategy and solutions Andrew Karson said.
“Brooklyn is home to some of the world’s greatest creators across genres of culture, including fashion and the arts, and we feel inspired to have the unique ability to marry basketball with the best of our boroughs.”
