The Detroit Lions kicked off their 90th season celebration on Wednesday by unveiling a commemorative logo, which will be worn as a patch on their uniforms this fall.
The logo pulls inspiration from Detroit’s 1961-69 logo, which featured a lion and two vertical bars in Honolulu blue and silver. The lion was previously used in the team’s 60th anniversary logo (1993), while the two bars can be seen in the William Clay Ford memorial patches worn from 2014-16 and since 2017.
The Lions were founded as the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans in 1930 before relocating to Detroit and rebranding in 1934, which actually makes this their 94th season of football and 90th season in the Motor City.
In addition to the 1993 season, the Lions also wore a patch on their uniforms to celebrate their 50th and 75th seasons in Detroit in 1983 and 2008, respectively.
“It is truly amazing that we are celebrating 90 seasons of Lions football,” principal owner and chair Sheila Ford Hamp said in a statement. “My family is proud to have been associated with the organization for 60 of those years and cherish the relationship the team has with the NFL, the city of Detroit and our amazing Lions fans around the world. We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone with our fans throughout the upcoming season.”
The 90th season patch will be worn on the left chest of the jersey, which will be moving to Nike’s Vapor Fusion template. We previously reported that most NFL teams will be moving to this template this fall, with the Lions now joining the Panthers in previewing that change.
