The Double-A Portland Sea Dogs will play a game this season as the Maine Clambakes, paying tribute to a New England tradition that derives from Wampanoag and other coastal Native Americans in the area.
The logo features an anthropomorphic clam holding a baseball bat, peering out from between its shells. In addition to clams, traditional clambakes include lobster, corn on the cob, potatoes, and blueberry cake, which are steamed in a pit oven over layers of seaweed.
“Maine Clambakes have been a part of celebrations and gatherings for centuries in New England,” said Sea Dogs President and General Manager Geoff Iacuessa in a statement. “We are excited to celebrate this tradition with Sea Dogs baseball to showcase the culinary cuisine that helps define our region.”
The Sea Dogs will wear Maine Clambake jerseys in a game against the Richmond Flying Squirrels Friday, August 25.
