CFL’s Calgary Stampeders Go Full Retro With New Road Uniforms

After the retro home uniform they introduced for their 75th season in 2021 proved popular with fans, the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders are leaning into the throwback look with a complementary road look.

The Stampeders unveiled the new white road uniforms on their social media platforms on Tuesday, April 18. It’s pretty much a color swap of their retro home uniforms, with red stripes over the shoulders of a white jersey and their white primary horse silhouette logo on red sleeves. The collar is also red, and the red names and numbers have no outlines and are set in a classic varsity font.

The new white uniforms will be paired with red pants that have two stripes running down each side and white socks. These again are color swaps of the pants and socks that go with the red jersey.

The Stamps have also tweaked the red home jersey slightly. The retro logo on the sleeves — originally used from 1945 to 1971 — has been replaced by the club’s current primary logo, a white silhouette of a running horse with a black outline and drop shadow. Eagle-eyed Twitter followers noticed the change back in March when the Stampeders announced linebacker James Vaughters had re-signed with the team after four seasons in the NFL.

The Stampeders will continue using the same helmet they used in 2022 with both their home and road uniforms (seen above), but with a white facemask instead of black. The red shell has a white horse silhouette with a black outline on either side, along with a white stripe bordered in black down the middle.

The black alternate uniform that Calgary introduced last year will remain unchanged in 2023. It has red and white stripes over each shoulder, a white collar, red Western-style numbers with white outlines, and a tonal “CGY” pattern on the sleeves. The helmet has a red shell and chrome horse silhouettes, along with a chrome barbed wire stripe down the middle. It’s likely this uniform won’t be worn until the Labour Day Classic against the Edmonton Elks in September.

The Stampeders kick off their preseason schedule against the Elks on Monday, May 22. They open their 2023 CFL regular season on Thursday, June 8, when they host the BC Lions — who also unveiled new uniforms recently.
