The Double-A Altoona Curve will play as the Altoona Pizzas for a full week later this season, paying tribute to a culinary wonder that combines Sicilian-style pizza with square, processed American cheese. The announcement has been met with a chorus of social media pundits yucking Altoona pizza lovers’ yum.
Altoona-style pizza, such as it is, features a thick crust with tomato sauce, bell peppers, salami, and either Velveeta or yellow American cheese. According to the website Discovering PA, the unique style of pizza was created at the Altoona Hotel in the 1960s or ’70s. That hotel burned down in 2013 but the pizza lives on at a number of other local establishments.
The logo features an anthropomorphized (and mustachioed!) square pizza character wielding a salami like a club. The tri-tone red, white, and green caps unveiled by the team evoke the Italian flag.
The Altoona Pizzas will play a slate of games August 8–13.
