German Bundesliga powerhouses FC Bayern Munich are switching things up for their 2023-24 home kit, eschewing their usual red base and going with a predominantly white kit as a nod to a squad from nearly 60 years ago.
FC Bayern unveiled the new home kit on their website and social media channels on Wednesday, May 17. The front and back of the kit are solid white, while the raglan sleeves are bright red. The combination is an homage to the home kit worn by FC Bayern players in 1965, when the club won promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time. They’ve stayed in Germany’s top-flight domestic league ever since.
The crew neck collar is red, while the sleeve cuffs and Adidas shoulder stripes are white. The club crest — including the five stars representing 30 Bundesliga titles — on the left chest is rendered in monochromatic red, as is the Adidas logo on the right chest. It’s all tied together with the slogan “Rot & Weiß ein Leben lang” (“Red and White For Life”) printed inside the collar.
“When you think of FC Bayern, images in red and white immediately come to mind. Even as a child, my room was decorated in these colours and it’s a dream to be able to wear them on the pitch. The new jersey combines history and elegance – and we want to do justice to these colours.”
— Lina Magull, FC Bayern Women
The white sleeve cuffs and red taping down the sides and across the back hem are embossed with the name of the club.
“The colours red and white have been with me all my life. With this traditional design, the new home kit stands for the success story of FC Bayern Munich.”
— Thomas Müller, FC Bayern
With inflation and continued supply chain issues around the world, jersey prices are rising across the board this season. FC Bayern is hoping to combat that somewhat by offering free name and number printing on the backs of 2023-24 home kits — a €15 value — until June 30.
Speaking of printing, FC Bayern are introducing a new name and number font this season. It’s based on the font Adidas used for the national teams it outfitted at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, but with the notches removed and inlines added.
FC Bayern’s men’s team will debut the new kits in their Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, May 20. The women’s team will wear them for the first time against Turbine Potsdam on Sunday, May 28.
