The Detroit Lions subtly announced on Monday evening they will unveil their new alternate helmets this Wednesday, June 21.

If the teaser photo – which features a 1970 Ford Mustang – is any indication, the helmet will be Honolulu blue with three gray stripes down the center to match their blue pants and a gray (or chrome) facemask.

The classic car doesn’t appear to offer any hints about what decal will be worn on the sides, but it would make sense for the Lions’ primary logo to be gray to complete the inverse of their gray helmet.

Or, perhaps the historical license plate is a sign that Detroit will use a retro logo instead? After all, the Lions’ primary logo – affectionately known as Bubbles – was introduced in 1970 before becoming more detailed in 2009.

The only thing for certain is the alternate helmet will be worn with Detroit’s all-gray Color Rush uniform, as well as that it will be part of a new uniform set that will be introduced ahead of the 2024 season.

The Lions, who will still continue to remove the decals from their primary gray helmets to wear with throwback uniforms for one game each season, previously wore blue helmets without decals from 1949-55.
