After capturing the first NBA championship in franchise history earlier this month with a 4-1 series victory over the Miami Heat, the Denver Nuggets have added a gold tab to the back collar of their jerseys.
The gold tab, which depicts the Larry O’Brien Trophy behind the No. 1, was first added to NBA jerseys ahead of the 2014-15 season. The numeral represents the number of titles won by the franchise, with the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers leading the way with 17 apiece.
The Nuggets’ victory leaves 11 franchise without a gold tab, including the Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, New Orleans Pelicans, Oklahoma City Thunder, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz.
The Thunder actually won an NBA title in 1978-79 as the Seattle SuperSonics but do not acknowledge their history prior to relocating in 2008 and do not have a gold tab. The Pacers and Nets, meanwhile, won ABA championships prior to joining the NBA in 1976 and do not qualify for gold tabs.
Similarly, college basketball schools outfitted by Nike or Jordan Brand also have a tab on the back collar of the jerseys, though they feature the school’s logo and either a gold tab to represent a national championship or a silver tab to commemorate a Final Four appearance.
