As first reported last week by graphic designer Conrad Burry, the Los Angeles Lakers have introduced a new partial logo and updated their shade of purple for the 2023-24 season.
The new partial logo is just as it sounds, pulling the “LA” directly from the Lakers’ primary logo, which now includes a darker shade of purple, the first update to Los Angeles’ color scheme since the 2017-18 season.
While the Lakers’ Association, Icon and Statement uniforms feature the same “L” as their wordmark and secondary logo, the new partial logo first appeared as part of the wordmark on their 2020-21 City Edition uniforms.
It also technically made an appearance on last season’s City Edition uniforms, although the “A” was much larger and separated as part of a new Los Angeles wordmark across the chest.
As for the new shade of royal purple, which was last called “Forum Blue” during the 1979-80 season, it separates the Lakers from the Sacramento Kings, who use the same shade of Pantone 268 C.
The Lakers have updated their shade of purple at least five times since moving to California in 1960, though they actually wore double blue uniforms for their first seven seasons in Los Angeles. They then began to use purple in their logos and marketing material two years prior to dropping the blue uniforms.
This latest change is reflected on the aforementioned primary and secondary logos, which have remained the same since 2001-02. However, the Lakers’ uniforms will continue to use the previous shade of purple – at least for now.
