Past Meets Future in AS Roma’s 23-24 Home Kit – Plus More European Unveilings

Italian Serie A side AS Roma is celebrating its past while looking to the future with their new home kit for 2023-24, which they unveiled on Thursday, July 6.

This season, Roma has switched suppliers from New Balance — with whom they had a contract for the past two seasons — to Adidas, who previously supplied their jerseys from 1991 to 1994. The 2023-24 home kit is an homage to one of those previous Adidas jerseys, the home kit from 1992-93. The dark red jersey features Roma’s lupetto wolf’s head crest on the left chest in gold.

The shirt also features a dark red V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs with two gold stripes running through them. The collar also has a gold insert trimmed in dark red at the front. Names and numbers on the back are printed in gold, and the numbers feature a tonal graphic of ancient Rome.

The Adidas logo on the chest, Adidas shoulder stripes, side panels and taping down the sides and across the back hem are all gold. A square on the back collar contains the phrase “DAJE ROMA DAJE” (“Come on Roma, come on”).

The shorts and socks that go with the home kit are also dark red with gold trim.

The photos released on Thursday don’t show a sponsor logo on the front of the jerseys. Roma ended its contract with blockchain company DigitalBits in April 2023 after the company missed payments. They played matches at the end of the 2022-23 season with the initial “SPQR” on their shirts, which stands for “Senatus Populusque Romanus” (“The Senate and the People of Rome”).

AS Roma have preseason friendlies scheduled against Tottenham Hotspur and Incheon United in Singapore and South Korea, respectively, before they open their 2023-24 Serie A campaign against US Salernitana 1919 on Sunday, August 20.

SEVILLA FC – Home, Away and Third

Spanish La Liga side Sevilla FC is capturing the feeling of its club and its city with its 2023-24 kits, made by Castore. The home kit is Sevilla’s traditional white, with an embossed “geometric motifs inspired by the deconstruction of the club crest and modern ceramics” and white pinstripes on the red collar and sleeve cuffs. The red away kit features swirling tonal patterns that “evoke the flags waving” at their home stadium. The third kit is black and blue with neon magenta accents. “Inspired by night-time in Sevilla, it also seeks to incorporate historical patterns from traditional architecture” in their home city, the club’s website reads.

CA OSASUNA – Home, Away and Third

Meanwhile, fellow La Liga club CA Osasuna are reaching waaay back into history for the inspiration for their 2023-24 kits, made by Adidas. The three kits celebrate the 600th anniversary of the Privilege of the Union, a treaty that united the three burghs of Pamplona — La Navarrería, Burgo de San Cernin and Población de San Nicolás — in a single council. Each Osasuna kit represents one of those burghs: the red home kit represents San Nicolás; the light blue away kit represents San Cernin; and the green third kit represents Navarrería. Printed inside the collar of each kit is the phrase “Fean, & ayan à fer una comunidat indivifible” (“Go and be an indivisible community”), which is part of the original text of the treaty that was signed by King Charles III of Navarre on September 8, 1423.

GIRONA FC – Away and Third

After releasing their home kits in late May, La Liga side Girona FC have rounded out their slate of 2023-24 kits with the unveiling of away and third options, made by Puma. The away kit is predominantly white, with blue speckles all over the front and sleeves, and blue trim on the collar and sleeve cuffs. The away kit is solid olive green with lighter green accents.

CÁDIZ CF – Third

Staying in Spain, La Liga side Cádiz CF have rolled out their 2023-24 third kit, made by Macron, which is dedicated to the province of Cádiz. The kit is predominantly green — also the predominant color of the provincial flag — with tonal pinstripes down the front. Trim around the collar and sleeve cuffs is gold, as are the Macron and sponsor logos on the chest. The club crest is monochrome gold.

AFC BOURNEMOUTH – Home

Over in England, after sporting a wild home kit design in 2022-23, Premier League club AFC Bournemouth are going much more traditional for 2023-24. Their new home kit, made by Umbro, features the club’s usual black and red stripes, though the black stripes are wider than the red ones. The red stripes are also flanked by red pinstripes. The crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are solid black.

BRENTFORD FC – Home

Like they did in 2021-22 and 2022-23, Premier League side Brentford FC’s new home kit will be used for the next two seasons. Made by Umbro, the kit features the club’s usual red and white vertical stripes, but the red stripes fade to black in a halftone gradient pattern as they move toward the hem. A broad red stripe runs from the collar to the sleeve cuffs, and black panels appear under the arms. The front of the V-neck collar is red while the back half is black. The bee from the club crest is isolated and printed in monochrome black on the back collar.

1. FC KÖLN – Home

In Germany, 1. FC Köln are marking the 60th anniversary of their first Bundesliga championship with new home kits that mirror what the club wore in 1963-64. The shirt is solid white, with the sponsor logo on the chest in red and another on the left sleeve in green. A red stripe on the shoulders contains tonal Hummel chevrons. The club crest appears in full color on both the left chest and the back collar.

VfL BOCHUM – Home and Away

German Bundesliga side VfL Bochum pay tribute to their home stadium, the Vonovia Ruhrstadion, with their home and away kits for 2023-24, made by Mizuno. The dark blue home kit features lighter blue and white pinstripes running diagonally across the front and white stripes through the middle of both the crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs. The white away kit features an embossed pattern evoking features of the stadium on the front, along with dark blue accents on the collar and sleeve cuffs.

SC FREIBURG – Home, Away and Third

Elsewhere in Germany, SC Frieburg are looking to follow up their fifth-place finish in last season’s Bundesliga table in style with new kits by Nike. The home and away kits share similar patterns of jagged geometric shapes on the front, with the home kit in red and white and the away kit in black and grey. The third kit is solid white with an embossed pattern along the sides consisting of the griffin head and the SCF monogram from the club crest inside connected hexagons.

OLYMPIQUE MARSEILLE – Home and Away

French Ligue 1 side Olympique de Marseille pay tribute to the ancient Greek colony of Massalia — the ruins of which exist within the city of Marseille — with their 2023-24 home and away kits, made by Puma. The white home shirt has a tonal pattern on the front “inspired by the limestone rocks of the city of Massilia, which have unique lines formed by time.” It also features a crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs with white stripes through the center and blue triangular inserts at the hem.

The dark blue away kit has white curved lines across the front approximating the marine maps of the seabed off the coast of Marseille “that have been so important in the history of the city and the fishermen who have always relied on the Good Mother for their protection at sea.” It also has white accents on the collar, sleeve cuffs and hem.
