The Heisman Trophy Trust on Monday afternoon unveiled an updated logo for the Heisman Memorial Trophy, which is widely considered the most prestigious individual award in college football.
“Our refreshed logo kicks off an exciting new chapter for the Heisman Trophy Trust,” president Michael Comerford said in a statement. “This refresh is a cleaner version of the previous logo and gives us a chance to highlight the important charitable work the Heisman Trophy Trust has been doing for the last 20-plus years.
“While it’s not a full overhaul, we feel it’s a more modern version that better represents the Heisman Trophy Trust and our mission.”
Beyond awarding the trophy to the nation’s most outstanding player each year, the trust also supports youth programs in underserved communities, funds the Heisman High School Scholarship Program and presents the Heisman Humanitarian Award.
As for the logo, which was refreshed by our friends at Joe Bosack & Co., it continues to depict a sidestepping, stiff-arming football player, just like the 45-pound bronze trophy, which was most recently won by USC quarterback Caleb Williams.
There are actually two versions of the updated logo, which are purposely built for light and dark backgrounds. The previous version was reversed in different applications, meanwhile, creating a negative (or ghost) logo on dark backgrounds.
The 2023 Heisman Trophy will be presented on Dec. 9, with Williams looking to become just the second two-time winner in the award’s 89-year history, joining former Ohio State running back Archie Griffin (1974-75).
