The Atlanta Falcons announced on Thursday they will wear their red throwback helmets three times this season, including Sept. 17 against the Green Bay Packers, Oct. 15 against the Washington Commanders and Nov. 26 against the New Orleans Saints.

The Falcons originally wore red helmets from their inception in 1966 until 1990, when they switched to black lids. They also donned red helmets as part of a throwback design from 2009-12, right before the NFL implemented its one-helmet rule.

Atlanta subsequently opted to blend two different eras when the throwback uniforms returned in 2016, pairing 1966 jerseys, pants and socks with their standard black helmet with throwback decals for at least two games each season.

When the league relaxed its one-helmet rule last year, the Falcons reintroduced the red helmet, which features a throwback logo on both sides, a gray facemask and a stripe that borrows its colors from in-state schools Georgia and Georgia Tech.

Atlanta then wore the throwback uniforms with red helmets in a 28-14 win over the San Francisco 49ers and a 19-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but with the red-to-black gradient uniforms being shelved this year, that will expand to three games this fall.
