Confirming their announcement from St. Patrick’s Day, the Notre Dame football program on Monday morning unveiled new green alternate uniforms, which will be worn against Ohio State on Sept. 23 (7:30 p.m. ET on NBC).
The uniforms consist of the Fighting Irish’s traditional gold helmet, green jerseys with white numbers outlined in gold and green pants with Notre Dame’s monogram on the left hip in white outlined in gold to match the design on the sleeves.
The Fighting Irish initially wore green jerseys instead of navy blue in 1921 as a way to distinguish players from opponents wearing similar colors, but there were periods throughout their history where green was actually their primary look.
That includes a 15-year period following World War II and four seasons from 1977-80, a stint that notably began with a 49-19 blowout of No. 5 USC, when Notre Dame wore navy blue jerseys during warmups but had green jerseys waiting in the locker room.
Since then, green has only been worn occasionally, with the Fighting Irish posting an 11-6 record in green home jerseys or white road jerseys with green accents since 1983. They’re currently on a six-game winning streak when green appear on their uniforms.
Some fans believe the color is cursed, though, as Notre Dame suffered heartbreaking losses to Boston College in 2002 and USC in 2005, as well as a blowout to the Trojans in 2007. The Irish were also stunned at Michigan in 2011 while wearing green-accented throwback uniforms.
Recently, green uniforms have been associated with the Shamrock Series, including wins over Army at Yankee Stadium in 2010, Maryland at FedEx Field in 2011, Arizona State at AT&T Stadium in 2013, Boston College at Fenway Park in 2015 and Army at the Alamodome in 2016.
Aside from the first win over the Black Knights, the Shamrock Series uniforms were unique and only worn once. The Fighting Irish subsequently reintroduced a standard green alternate during a win over Florida State in 2018, then wore those same uniforms in a win over Cal last fall.
Those uniforms paired Notre Dame’s traditional gold helmet with green jerseys with blue numbers outlined in gold and gold pants. The new jerseys, meanwhile, are similar to what the Fighting Irish wore in the aforementioned loss to the Eagles in 2002.
That said, this will be just the second time in history that Notre Dame will wear green pants, joining the 2015 win over Boston College. That uniform also featured blue numbers and was inspired by the Green Monster at Fenway Park.
