When Notre Dame and Navy travel to Dublin, Ireland, for their Week Zero matchup later this month, both teams will be sporting alternate uniforms that feature Gaelic-style patterns.
The uniforms aren’t a significant departure from what the Fighting Irish and Midshipmen usually wear, as they simply add the aforementioned striping patterns to the sleeves or shoulders of their respective home and road uniforms.
For Notre Dame, the stylized pattern behind the monogram on the sleeves matches the signage inside the Golden Dome on campus, while Navy’s shoulder stripes mimic the Carrick Bend, a standard sailor’s knot that its also among the eight different kinds of Celtic knots.

Both teams also have the Flag of Ireland and a patch featuring a Gaelic knotted shamrock, the Claddagh ring symbol and the year on the back collar of the uniforms to “express the historical loyalty and friendship between the two schools.”
This marks the third matchup in Ireland between Notre Dame and Navy, with the Fighting Irish beating the Midshipmen, 54-27, in the Shamrock Classic at Croke Park in 1996 and 50-10 in the Emerald Isle Classic at Aviva Stadium in 2012.
This year’s game will also take place at Aviva Stadium on Aug. 26, though it will be the first where Notre Dame is considered the home team and Navy the road team. Kickoff for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic is schedule for 2:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
