After unveiling the gold jerseys last month, the West Virginia football program revealed its new “Country Roads” alternate uniforms in full on Thursday evening.
The uniforms, which will be worn in the 106th Backyard Brawl against Pittsburgh on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET on ABC), follow the same template as the white “Country Roads” uniforms that debuted in last season’s 38-31 loss to the Panthers.
The gold jerseys feature custom blue numbers and sleeve caps with a sublimated roadmap of the state, including Interstate 79, which connects Morgantown to Pittsburgh, as well a “Mountaineers” wordmark across the chest.
The Flying “WV” and state outline can be seen at the base of the blue collar, which also includes the roadmap and “Cue Country Roads” as a nod to the theme song for the state of West Virginia, which has been played at every Mountaineer home game since 1972.
Both the blue helmets – which feature the Flying “WV” inside a gold state outline on the sides – and pants include a pair of gold stripes that are supposed to resemble the center lines on roadways. This design element was also carried over from last year’s all-white look.
West Virginia went 1-2 in the white “Country Roads” jerseys, including the aforementioned loss to the Panthers, a 33-10 win at Virginia Tech and a 48-10 loss at Texas Tech. They wore blue pants in the win over the Hokies and gold pants in the loss to the Red Raiders.
In addition to the debut of the new “Country Roads” uniforms, the Mountaineers are encouraging fans to “Stripe Out” Milan Puskar Stadium this weekend, which will perfectly match the blue helmets, gold jerseys and blue pants.
