Aston Villa to Ditch New Crest After 1 Season, Come Up with New Design for 150th Anniversary

Not even a year after rolling out a new one, Premier League side Aston Villa says it will once again revisit the issue of its crest in the leadup to the club’s 150th anniversary in 2024.

Aston Villa says on its website that the club is “planning to re-engage with supporters to explore options for the selection of a permanent new-look crest ahead of the club’s 150th anniversary next year.” The decision was first announced at a recent meeting of the club’s fan advisory board.

Aston Villa introduced a new crest in November 2022, with a roundel shape beating out a shield inspired by the gas lamp in the club’s founding story in a vote among season ticket holders and club members. The 2023-24 season was the first with the new crest on the club’s home, away and third kits.

Subsequent to the previous consultation process, the results of which currently adorn the 2023/24 playing and training kits, the club has been assessing the impact of the change from local, global and commercial perspectives and have concluded that the current crest has not had the impact which had been hoped when it was introduced.

The club goes on to say that the results of the original process would form the foundation of the new consultations with supporters, which will take place over the coming weeks. They’ll also start a separate process to develop a “special marque” to recognize their 150th anniversary. “This anniversary marque will be included on club celebrations acknowledging the rich history of Aston Villa FC,” their website reads.

While the new crest appeared on kits this year, Aston Villa has continued to use their previous crest — a light blue shield with a yellow lion and claret “AVFC” monogram — on their website and social media.
