English football giants Arsenal FC are taking a big step forward with their-first-ever bespoke away kit for their women’s first team, which was developed in collaboration with Adidas and designer Stella McCartney.
The new kit was unveiled on Thursday, September 28, and will be worn on the pitch for the first time in Arsenal’s FA Women’s Super League match against Manchester United on Friday, October 6.
The shirt features a light “glow blue” and white wave pattern on the front and back, accented by bright “halo pink” trim around the white V-neck collar and Adidas shoulder stripes. The raglan sleeves are solid light blue with white cuffs. Sponsor logos on the chest and sleeve are pink, while the club crest and Adidas logo — with Stella McCartney’s name encircling it — on the chest are navy blue.
Names and numbers will be printed on the back in navy blue.
Photos accompanying Thursday’s announcement showed players wearing the away shirt with light blue shorts and socks, both of which had pink accents and navy blue logos.
“It’s so special to be marking this with a collection as playful and bold as this one. For me, football has always been about having fun and getting creative – it’s why I got into it as a young girl and it’s what inspires me today,” Arsenal forward Alessia Russo said on Arsenal’s website. “I love that this collection represents that, and I can’t wait to wear the shirt with pride on match day.”
Arsenal’s men’s first team will also wear the shirts in warmups prior to their match against defending Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday, October 8.
“Designing for a team that truly embodies what it takes to be an athlete and inspire the next generation of footballers has been incredibly special,” McCartney said in Thursday’s announcement. “I love that the away jersey taps into the exciting intersection of fashion and football through its elevated geometric print and captivating hues – with technical performance materials at the core.”
This isn’t Arsenal Women’s first collaboration with Stella McCartney. In March 2022, the club released a line of training wear designed by McCartney that was touted as “a fresh vision for what a signature collection for club, people and planet could be.”
While Arsenal may be the highest-profile women’s club team to introduce a bespoke away kit, they’re not the first. Fellow English side Sheffield United, who play in the FA WSL 2, launched their women’s away kit in late August.
Adidas also gave women’s national teams it outfits their own away kits for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Arsenal Women open their 2023-24 FA WSL season on Sunday, October 1, when they host Liverpool at Emirates Stadium.
