More than four months after they captured their first NBA championship, the Denver Nuggets will kick off the 2023-24 season by hosting the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday evening, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET on TNT.
With that said, we’ve once again compiled a comprehensive list of every uniform, logo and court change that has taken place across the association this year, broken down alphabetically by team below.
Before we jump into that, we have to discuss a change to the logo for the 2024 All-Star Game, which will take place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, home of the Indiana Pacers, on Feb. 18.
Indianapolis was originally supposed to host the event in 2021, but it was relocated to Atlanta due to the COVID-19 pandemic and scheduling conflicts with the 2021 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The NBA initially replaced the year in the logo to reflect the change but has since updated the logo to include “Indy” instead of “Indianapolis,” while also flipping the colors and including the ball from the Pacers’ logo.
Meanwhile, the NBA will debut a new In-Season Tournament this year, which will tip off on Nov. 3 and culminate with the semifinals and championship game at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Dec. 7 and 9.
The tournament consists of group play, with all 30 teams randomly drawn into groups of five within their conference. Eight teams – six group winners and two wild cards – will then advance to the knockout rounds.
The four Eastern and four Western Conference teams advancing to the knockout rounds are represented by blue and red brackets in the tournament logo, which also features the new NBA Cup on the right.
So, now that we’ve set the stage let’s dive head first into our team-by-team breakdown for the 2023-24 NBA season. It’s worth noting this list includes several leaked City Edition designs, which will be officially unveiled on Nov. 2.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics’ 2023-24 City Edition uniforms, which leaked this week and have subsequently been confirmed by the team, are seemingly a nod to Dr. James Naismith, who invented basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891. They feature an arched “Boston” wordmark in green with a gold drop shadow and gold side panels that appear to have a parquet floor texture inspired by the court at TD Garden.
Brooklyn Nets
The Nets have partnered with local artist Brian Donnelly, known professionally as KAWS, to create their 2023-24 City Edition uniforms, which blend his abstract painting style with a black, white, gray, teal, blue and red colour palette.
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets will celebrate their 35th anniversary during the 2023-24 season with a commemorative logo and a Classic Edition uniform, which matches their 1997-2002 design. They also announced a new jersey patch partnership with Feastables, a snack company owned by social media influencer Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson.
Chicago Bulls
The Bulls’ 2023-24 City Edition uniforms, which leaked in September, are black and feature a vertical “Chicago” wordmark in white, reminiscent of the marquee and font used on the facade of Chicago Stadium, their home from 1967-94.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cavaliers quietly unveiled their 2023-24 City Edition set during a special event for season ticket holders this week. The wine-coloured uniforms feature “The Land” across the chest, as well as a pattern on the collar, armholes and shorts that are inspired by the carpet at Connor Palace, also known as The Palace Theatre.
Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks’ 2023-24 City Edition set, which leaked in September, appears to be a nod to singer, songwriter and record producer Leon Bridges, who was raised in Fort Worth, as it features his signature near the jock tag, a classic soul-style wordmark and sublimated lyrics on the side panels.
Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets have added a gold tab to the back collar of their jerseys, which depicts the Larry O’Brien Trophy behind the No. 1 and signifies the teams that have won an NBA championship. There are now just 11 franchises without a gold tab on their jerseys.
Detroit Pistons
The Pistons’ 2023-24 City Edition uniforms leaked earlier this month and are undoubtedly inspired by the “Detroit Bad Boys” shirts that exploded in popularity as the franchise won back-to-back championships in 1988-89 and 1989-90. Those shirts prominently displayed a basketball behind a skull and crossbones, which can be seen on the side panels of the jerseys.
Golden State Warriors
The Warriors’ 2023-24 City Edition set, which leaked in September, features a curved “San Francisco” wordmark across the chest, as well as a rope-like pattern around the waistband.
There’s also a new logo on the waistband that is reminiscent of the sun in the flag of the Philippines. It would make sense for the Warriors to honour the more than 325,000 local Filipino residents the same way they honoured the city’s Chinese heritage with their previous Chinese New Year and City sets.
Houston Rockets
The Rockets appear to be the latest team to pay homage to the Houston Oilers – joining the Tennessee Titans, Houston Cougars and Rice Owls – with their 2023-24 City Edition set, which was leaked on Instagram by guard Fred VanVleet and seemingly features an “H-Town” wordmark in light blue and red.
The Rockets have also made a slight change to their Statement Edition uniform, which now features red armholes instead of black.
Indiana Pacers
Similar to the aforementioned All-Star Game logo, the Pacers’ apparent 2023-24 City Edition uniforms prominently display an “Indy” wordmark across the chest. There’s also a spray paint-like design on the side panels of the jersey, which bleeds into the Pacers’ primary logo on the bottom of the shorts.
Los Angeles Clippers
The inspiration for the Clippers’ 2023-24 City Edition set is unclear, though the wordmark across the chest appears to be based on their 1978-82 logo, which would mark the second time in three years that they pay homage to their time in San Diego. Other notable details yet to be deciphered from this month’s leak include the hand-drawn basketballs in the wordmark and above the jock tag, as well as the flowers below it.
Los Angeles Lakers
Although it won’t be reflected on their uniforms, at least for this season, the Lakers now use a darker shade of purple on their primary, secondary and new partial “LA” logo. Meanwhile, their 2023-24 City Edition set leaked back in August. It features a triangle-shaped wordmark that was used by the franchise in the 1960s in gold and purple against a black background.
Memphis Grizzlies
Media Day also offered our first glimpse at the Grizzlies’ 2023-24 City Edition set, which prominently displays the “MEM” logo that has appeared on the waistbands of their Association and Icon Edition uniforms and trim on their Statement uniforms since the 2018-19 season. It also carries over the asymmetrical design the franchise has used sporadically since it was located in Vancouver, which is likely why the uniforms are black, as well.
Miami Heat
The Heat’s 2023-24 City Edition uniform, which leaked alongside the Warriors’ set, appears to be a stripped-down version of their black Icon Edition set and features a red and white “Heat Culture” wordmark across the chest, a phrase that represents the franchise’s sustained success. They also have a new advertisement on their jerseys for Carnival Corporation, which is chaired by Heat owner Micky Arison.
Milwaukee Bucks
For the second straight season, the Bucks will have a blue City Edition uniform, though this time, it appears they will pay homage to the Hoan Bridge with a “Milwaukee” wordmark inside of an arched, cream-coloured backdrop. The quality of the leak also makes the jersey look textured, which could represent the inlet to the Milwaukee River that the bridge spans.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Timberwolves will have two new uniforms this season, including a City Edition set that is an ode to the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” and a 1989-90 Classic Edition uniform. They also revealed a matching court design and commemorative logo that celebrates their 35th season.
New Orleans Pelicans
In addition to simplifying their Global logo and updating their wordmark, the Pelicans unveiled new Statement Edition uniforms, which feature an arched “Crescent City” wordmark above and below the numbers. They have also unveiled a new court design for the Smoothie King Center that includes a sublimated fleur-de-lis pattern inside the three-point line and a bayou-like design along the baseline.
New York Knicks
The Knicks updated the shade of orange used in their primary logo, though it’s unclear if it will be reflected on their uniforms – or if it would even be noticeable. Additionally, their 2023-24 City Edition uniforms leaked this week. They notably feature an offset “New York” wordmark, pinstripes, black side panels reminiscent of their 1997-2001 design and the familiar “NYC” Nike logo on the shoulder.
Orlando Magic
The Magic are also celebrating their 35th season this year with a commemorative logo, which blends different aspects of their logo history, as well as Classic Edition uniforms that replicate what the franchise wore from 1998-2003, including the sublimated stars throughout and a black and silver pinstripe pattern down the sides. There’s also a matching court design.
Philadelphia 76ers
It appears the 76ers have made a subtle change to their uniforms for the upcoming season, using a thicker block shadow around the “Phila” wordmark and numbers on the jersey. The shadow also drops to the right side of the typeface after previously falling to the left.
The 76ers also unveiled their 2023-24 City Edition set during a special event for season ticket holders, which was held this week at Reading Terminal Market, a historic farmer’s market that serves as the inspiration for the uniforms.
This marks the second consecutive year that Philadelphia will have “The City of Brotherly Love” across the chest, though this year’s number font and the arrows on the right side of the jerseys are pulled directly from the neon sign outside of the market.
Phoenix Suns
The Suns were one of two teams to receive a complete overhaul this offseason, introducing new Association and Icon Edition uniforms in August that blend their classic sunburst design with modern branding.
Meanwhile, their City Edition set leaked in September. It features “El Valle” – the Spanish translation for “The Valley” – across the chest and an airbrushed design down the sides, which is reminiscent of the pinstripes on a lowrider, a customized car rooted in Mexican-American culture.
Lastly, the Suns will have three new court designs for the upcoming season, including a standard home design, a Statement Edition design that matches their black Statement set and an unreleased City Edition design.
Sacramento Kings
There were changes galore for the Kings, who were the other team to unveil new Association, Icon and Statement Edition uniforms this offseason. Both the Association and Icon sets feature a new script wordmark across the chest, while the Statement set is half black and half purple as a nod to their 1994-97 alternate design.
Additionally, the Kings will celebrate their 100th anniversary this season with a commemorative logo, which features five jewels to represent the cities they have called home, as well as new City Edition uniforms, which pull inspiration from their time as the Cincinnati Royals, including the vertical team name and stripes.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs will celebrate the 55th anniversary of HemisFair ’68 (also known as the 1968 World’s Fair or International Exposition) with their 2023-24 City Edition set, though only the court design has been leaked to this point. It features a throwback colour scheme of seafoam, orange, peach and brown and has a vintage Tower of the Americas logo at center court, as the tower was built specifically for the fair.
Toronto Raptors
Guard Dennis Schröder leaked the Raptors’ 2023-24 City Edition set on Instagram during Media Day earlier this month. The gold uniforms feature an arched “Toronto” wordmark across the chest, mimicking the Raptors’ 2015-20 design, as well as jagged pinstripes that are a callback to their 1995-99 uniforms.
Utah Jazz
The Jazz have two new uniforms for the 2023-24 season, though they were actually announced last summer when they revealed their current Association, Icon and Statement Edition sets. That includes a purple City Edition set inspired by their 1996-2004 mountain design and a 1974-75 Classic Edition uniform for their 50th season celebration.
Washington Wizards
Whereas the jerseys are often the first thing to leak, we caught our first glimpse at the Wizards’ 2023-24 City Edition shorts earlier this month. They feature the three stars from the Washington D.C. flag, as well as blue and bronze accents reminiscent of their original colour scheme.
The logo on the shorts is new, as well, and it appears to replace the Washington Monument with another unknown building.
