The Indiana men’s and women’s basketball programs will wear a patch on their jerseys this season in honor of legendary coach Bob Knight, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 83.
Knight won a school-record 662 games and led the Hoosiers to three national championships, five Final Four appearances, 11 Big Ten titles and 24 NCAA Tournament appearances from 1971-2000.
Knight, who played collegiately at Ohio State and was a member of the Buckeyes’ 1959-60 national championship team, also spent time as the head coach at Army from 1965-71 and Texas Tech from 2001-08.
Knight retired in 2008 as the winningest coach in Division I college basketball history with a 902-371 record across 42 seasons, though he has since fallen to sixth on the all-time list.
The patch features Knight’s initials below three stars, which are a nod to his nickname, “The General,” and the aforementioned titles. It will make its on-court debut during tonight’s exhibition game against Marian, which tips off at 6:30 p.m. ET on BTN+.
Additionally, the Hoosiers’ football program will honor Knight by wearing the patch as a helmet decal for the remainder of the season, including Saturday’s home game against Wisconsin, which is scheduled for a noon kickoff on BTN.
