Bayern Munich Fans Protest As Team Wears Away Kit at Home in Champions League

Fans of German Bundesliga powerhouses Bayern Munich voiced their displeasure on Wednesday after their team wore their away kit at home for a UEFA Champions League match.

The fans unfurled a huge red jersey-shaped banner prior to Wednesday’s match against Turkish side Galatasaray at the Allianz Arena with the slogan “DIE CLUBFARBEN SIND UNANTASTBAR” (“THE CLUB COLORS ARE SACROSANCT,” according to Google Translate).

Bayern’s home kit for 2023-24 is white with red raglan sleeves. But they wore their black, purple and green away kits on Wednesday most likely due to a clash with Galatasaray. The Turkish club’s home kits for 2023-24 are half red and half yellow, while their away kits are white. They’ve not yet unveiled a third kit for this season.

After fan protests in 2018, Bayern Munich released a statement committing to only wear red and white home kits moving forward without mixing in other colors like navy blue.

“For fans, kits represent an important sign of identity with their club,” said Jörg Wacker, a member of the club’s board at the time. “FC Bayern München AG has thus announced that in future, only the club’s traditional colors of red and white will be used in official match clothing — that is, the home kit comprising shirt, shorts and socks. We will also stay in regular contact with fan representatives in relations to kits.”
