The American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers are putting a new twist on ’90s nostalgia in their market with their new “Outlaw” third jersey.
The jersey was unveiled on the team’s social media channels on Friday, November 17, and they’ll make their on-ice debut on Saturday, November 25, against the Abbotsford Canucks.
The base of the jersey is black, with angled yellow and red striping on the waist and sleeve cuffs that mimics what their NHL parent club, the Calgary Flames, wore first as an alternate from 1998 to 2000, then as a road jersey from 2000 to 2003, then again as an alternate from 2003 to 2006.
The front of the jersey features a new rendering of the Flames’ infamous fire-snorting horse head mascot, affectionately nicknamed Blasty. This time, rather than a head-on view of Blasty, he is seen from the side.
The collar is red and tapers closer to the front of the jersey. The Wranglers’ W logo appears on the left shoulder while the Flames’ C logo is on the right.
None of the photos released on Friday show the name or number fonts that will be used on the game jerseys. They were paired with black helmets, pants and gloves, though.
The Outlaw jersey is the latest in a wave of late ’90s and early 2000s nostalgia that the Flames have been riding lately. They brought back Blasty for the first round of the NHL’s Reverse Retro program in 2020, and then added that jersey to their rotation as an alternate in 2022-23.
The Wranglers also released a collection of hoodies and headwear with the new Blasty logo to coincide with Friday’s release.
The Wranglers will wear the Outlaw jerseys for 12 home games throughout the rest of the 2023-24 AHL regular season.
