Navy Unveils Submarine-Inspired Alternate Uniforms For Army Game

The Naval Academy football program on Monday afternoon unveiled new submarine-inspired alternate uniforms, which will be worn during the 124th Army-Navy Game on Dec. 9 (3 p.m. ET on CBS).

The uniforms feature Under Armour’s darkest shade of blue (Eclipse Navy) and are rather simple to convey the stealth design of a submarine, while the contrasting white font mimics the classification numbers on the haul.

Of course, the contrasting elements are required for on-field legibility, but the Naval Academy anchor – which is intertwined submarine warfare insignia on the sleeves – do not and thus are rendered in dark navy blue.

The focal point of the look is the hand-painted helmets that depict a Virginia-class submarine under water on the right side and the aforementioned anchor and warfare insignia in color-changing paint on the left.

The front of the helmet illustrates sonar radar, which is used by submarines to find their target, and is complete with a Navy wordmark on the front bumper and “Silent Service” on the back bumper.

Other details in the uniform include the silhouette of a submarine on top of a sonar screen above the “Silent Service” nameplate and the U.S.S. Massachusetts (SSN 798) patch on the left shoulder.

The vessel will be the 25th nuclear-powered submarine to enter Naval service when it is commissioned in Boston in 2025, which is appropriate since this year’s game takes place at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Lastly, the cleats – much like the helmets – feature a pattern that reflects waves and the movement of the season, as well as a vertically stacked Navy wordmark to match the numbers on the pants.
