Ligue 1 Adds ‘Top Scoreur’ Jersey Badge To Highlight Goals Leader Each Week

France’s top domestic football league, Ligue 1 Uber Eats, its trying out a new way to recognize the leading goal scorer in the league each matchday.

Starting this weekend, the league will place a special gold badge on the jersey of the player with the most goals heading into each weekend’s games. The badge is a gold hexagon with a white “S” and a gold “1” logo inside, and will be placed on the back of the jersey, above the player’s name.

The first recipient of the badge was Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé, who received a special shirt with the badge prior to PSG’s match against AS Monaco on Friday, November 24. Mbappé had 13 goals heading into the game.

More than just a badge, the S1 is a genuine design object conceived by Tyrsa, an artist who has already made a name for himself on a number of occasions, in collaboration with prestigious brands such as Dior, Louis Vuitton and Moncler, and with artists such as FKA Twigs and Childish Gambino.

The S1 badge symbolises the meeting of the letter ‘S’ for ‘Scoreur’ and the number ‘1’, joined together on a circuit that illustrates the race among the goalscorers. On closer inspection, you can also see the 34 lines that make up the background, like the 34 rounds of the Ligue 1 Uber Eats campaign. All in gold, to symbolise excellence and the highest place in the rankings.

The badge will go on the scoring chart leader’s jersey prior to each Ligue 1 matchday. At the end of the season, the leading scorer will receive a trophy for being the league’s Top Scoreur.

It’s very possible the badge will stay with Mbappé throughout the rest of the Ligue 1 season. Heading into Friday’s match against Monaco, he led the goals race by a wide margin, with Akor Adams of Montpellier HSC in a distant second place with seven goals.
