The New England Patriots will wear their “Pat Patriot” throwback uniforms for the second time this season when they host the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday (1 p.m. ET on CBS).
The uniforms, which were reintroduced last season following a 10-year hiatus, feature white helmets with a vintage logo on the sides, red jerseys with white and blue UCLA stripes on the shoulders and white pants with stripes that match the helmet.
The Patriots wore this design from their inaugural season in 1960, when they were known as the Boston Patriots, until a redesign ahead of the 1993 season, which featured a switch to royal blue jerseys with silver helmets and pants.
They also scrapped “Pat Patriot” that year in favor of their “Flying Elvis” logo, which then underwent a subtle change in 2000 when New England moved to navy blue and introduced the uniforms that are synonymous with six Super Bowl titles.
The Patriots are 7-2 at home in the throwback uniforms dating back to the 1994 season, including a 29-0 win over the Detroit Lions and 24-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills last year, as well as a 24-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins earlier this season.
In addition to the throwback uniforms, New England has once again painted a vintage design on the turf and added throwback signage at Gillette Stadium for Sunday’s game, with “Pat Patriot” at midfield and a retro wordmark in the end zones.
