The Indianapolis Colts announced this week they’ll wear their 1956 throwback uniforms during Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which kicks off at 4:30 p.m. ET on NFL Network.
The uniforms notably feature two horseshoes on the back of the white helmets, three white stripes on the sleeves of the blue jerseys, a single blue stripe down the sides of the white pants and blue socks with stripes that match the sleeves.
The look made its debut in a 38-31 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 and returned in a 24-17 loss to the Steelers last season. The Colts Cheerleaders – the NFL’s first cheer squad – also wore time-appropriate uniforms for both games.
The Colts, who were based in Baltimore from their founding in 1953 until they relocated to Indianapolis in 1984, won consecutive championships in 1958-59. However, their uniforms at the time were almost identical to what they wear now.
That includes UCLA stripes on the shoulders of their blue and white jerseys, horseshoes on both sides of their white helmets, as well as a single blue stripe in the center, and two blue stripes down the sides of their white pants.
With that, the Colts opted for the 1956 design, which is effectively the home version of the 1955 throwback uniforms they wore in a 26-24 loss the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010, though they featured blue helmets instead.
The Steelers, meanwhile, will counter with their standard road uniforms of black helmets, white jerseys and gold pants on Saturday afternoon. They actually wore gold helmets in the 1950s, so this uniform matchup has happened just once (last season).
