New Year, New Third Jersey for WHL’s Victoria Royals

The Western Hockey League’s Victoria Royals broke out a new look for the new year yesterday.

The Royals debuted a new third jersey on Monday, January 1, when they hosted the Calgary Hitmen at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The team had unveiled the jerseys a few days prior on their social media channels.

The new third jersey is predominantly blue, complementing their usual white home and black road jerseys. Like their other jerseys, the front features the Royals’ lion head logo.

The collar of the third jersey is blue, while the black shoulders are squared off and feature a new patch design. The patch has a small blue block-font R inside a blue V, with a silver crown on top. The style is similar to a logo the Victoria Cougars wore in the Pacific Coast Hockey League and the Western Hockey League between 1911 and 1926.

The waist and sleeves feature wide white and black stripes, with a narrower grey stripe in between. The numbers on the back and sleeve are blue with a thick white outline, while the names on the back are one-color white.

The striping pattern is similar to what’s found on the Royals’ regular home and road sweaters, while the number font on the third jersey is thicker, narrower and less angular.

The new jerseys gave the Royals the boost they needed to defeat the Hitmen 5-4 in overtime.
