According to team television host Drew Dougherty, the Houston Texans will unveil new uniforms the week of the 2024 NFL Draft, which will take place in Detroit on April 25-27.

“If the Texans don’t play again at NRG Stadium in the playoffs, Sunday was the last time you’ll see them wear the home uniforms they’ve worn since 2002,” Dougherty said in his weekly mailbag.

We’ve known for more than a year that Houston planned to unveil new uniforms as early as next season, as the franchise began soliciting input from fans regarding potential changes in December 2023.

The in-depth survey asked fans to share their opinions on the team’s helmets, jerseys and color scheme, as well as their thoughts on traditional or modern designs. It did not mention their logo, which Dougherty said will not change.

Additionally, Dougherty said the Texans will have four new uniforms next season, some of which will incorporate H-Town blue (or Columbia blue) as an accent color.

This, of course, is an unspoken nod to the Houston Oilers, who spent 37 years in Houston before moving to Tennessee in 1997 and becaming the Titans in 1999.

The Titans still own the Oilers’ nickname and colors, which is why they wore throwback uniforms this season, including in a 19-16 loss to the Texans on Dec. 17.

Still, it’s a major point of contention for those in Houston, who believe the nickname and colors belong to the city and not the franchise that abandoned them nearly 30 years ago.

As for the Texans, who entered the league as an expansion franchise, their uniforms have largely remained the same since their inaugural season, with a custom number font and a crescent-shaped shoulder design.

They added a red alternate jersey to their home blue and road white jerseys in 2003, then introduced their Color Rush set – which features red numbers and flips the stripes on their blue pants – in 2017.

A smaller change occurred in 2019, when the Texans placed their logo above the nameplate on the back of their jerseys. They then added a red alternate helmet to the rotation in 2022 after the NFL relaxed its one-helmet rule.
