The Ontario Hockey League’s Niagara IceDogs looked to take a bite out of cancer this week with some special edition jerseys.
For their game against the Mississauga Steelheads on Thursday, January 18, the IceDogs wore special orange jerseys to show their support for the Rankin Cancer Run, a local event that has raised more than $11,850,000 for cancer care organizations in the Niagara Region since 2006.
Taking inspiration from the run’s orange and yellow logo, the IceDogs’ jerseys were mainly orange, with yellow shoulders, an orange collar with a black insert at the front, and the IceDogs’ primary logo on the chest. The cuffs and waist were yellow, with an Arizona Coyotes-like off-white stripe in between.
The Rankin Cancer Run logo appeared on both shoulders. Numbers on the sleeves and back were printed in an off-white sans serif font, while the name on the back was set in an off-white block font.
The jerseys were paired with the IceDogs’ usual black helmets, black gloves and black pants with red and white stripes down the sides. The socks were orange at the top and yellow at the bottom, separated with a broad off-white stripe.
Players also showed their support for the cause with orange stick tape.
Game-worn jerseys were auctioned off after the game, with profits going to the Rankin Cancer Run.
While they looked good on the ice, the jerseys unfortunately weren’t enough to propel the IceDogs to victory, as they lost 2-1 to the Steelheads.
This is the second time the IceDogs have donned special jerseys to support the Rankin Cancer Run. The previous time was in January 2023 against the Erie Otters.
