The Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League might be entering their goth phase, if their new third jerseys are any indication.
The Petes unveiled the new jerseys on their website and social media channels on Saturday, January 20, just hours before debuting them on the ice against the Saginaw Spirit. The jerseys are almost completely black, with logos and striping only distinguishable by being a very dark grey.
The base of the jersey is black, and the Petes logo on the front is dark grey. The shoulders are also dark grey, along with squared-off shoulders and broad stripes around the arms.
“The Peterborough Petes are extremely excited to debut our official third jerseys at the PMC for our fans. We hope the fans enjoy the sleek new look and aesthetic design elements that are present throughout. These jerseys will serve as an alternative to the traditional maroon and white, moving the brand forward in a new, unique way.”
— Adam King, director of marketing, Peterborough Petes
Numbers on the back and sleeves are black with white outlines for legibility. Names on the back are one-color white.
The third jerseys have a recolored version of the patches found on the Petes’ regular home and away uniforms on the shoulders. The patch is in the shape of a shield with the letters “TPT” inside, along with the Petes logo and nine horizontal pinstripes. When the team was founded in 1956, they were sponsored by Toronto-Peterborough Transport and were known as the TPT Petes. The team officially changed its name to “Peterborough Petes” in 1966.
Black has been a small part of the Petes’ identity over the years, showing up in alternate logos and uniforms. But it has never before featured to this extent.
The new third jerseys are paired with black helmets, pants, gloves and socks “to offer a full visual experience for Petes fans,” according to the team’s website. The socks have a broad dark grey stripe to match the jersey.
The jerseys were designed by Kyle McDonald of Pioneer Inc., who also led a redesign of the Petes’ home and road jerseys that was unveiled at the start of the 2023-24 OHL season.
