With their biggest weekend of the year against their crosstown rivals on the horizon, the men’s hockey team at Boston College is breaking out a new look.
The No. 2-ranked Eagles introduced their new alternate jerseys on their social media accounts on Thursday, January 25, and will wear them on Friday, January 26, in the first half of a home-and-home series against Boston University — who happen to be ranked No. 1 in the country — in a rivalry dubbed “The Battle of Comm Ave.”
The New Balance-manufactured jerseys are mostly gold, with a swooping maroon eagle logo on the front. The eagle is rendered in a retro style — a stark contrast to the school’s current primary logo — which makes sense given the social media caption on the unveiling video: “A tribute to our history.”
The collar of the jersey is solid maroon with white laces. White and maroon stripes run around the waist and sleeves, angling downward on the arms.
The back of the jersey features five maroon stars on the back collar. Numbers on the back and sleeves are set in a maroon block font with white outlines, as are the names on the back.
The video BC posted to social media shows jerseys paired with maroon helmets, pants and gloves. The socks are gold at the top and maroon on the bottom, with maroon and white stripes in the middle.
The rivalry between BC and BU goes by many different names, including the Green Line Rivalry, the B-Line Rivalry and the Battle of Boston. “The Battle of Comm Ave” stems from Commonwealth Avenue, the road that links the two campuses.
The two teams have met at least twice a year since 1949. BU currently leads the series with 139 wins, 131 losses and 21 ties.
BC hosts BU at Kelley Rink in the first half of the home-and-home on Friday at 7 p.m. They meet again at BU’s Agganis Arena on Saturday, again at 7 p.m. ET.
