Bird is the word for the American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins as they bringing some fighting spirit from the TV screen with them to the rink.
One Wednesday, January 31, the Bruins unveiled special jerseys that they’ll wear for their Rhode Island Comic Con Weekend: Friday, February 16, against the Bridgeport Islanders and Sunday, February 18, against the Hartford Wolf Pack.
The logo on the front of the jersey combines Rhode Island hockey history with the state’s most famous animated family: the Griffins from “Family Guy.”
The Providence Reds played in the Canadian-American Hockey League from 1926 to 1936 and the American Hockey League from 1936 to 1977, and their jerseys featured a red rooster on the front. For 2024, the Bruins have reimagined the rooster as the chicken from “Family Guy,” with whom Peter Griffin has had some epic fistfights throughout the show’s run.
The base of the jersey is black, with red squared-off shoulders and a red collar with black laces. The arms and waist feature wide red stripes with narrower white stripes underneath. An RI Comic Con logo sits on the right chest, while a “walking bear” logo appears on each shoulder in which the bear looks like Stewie Griffin’s teddy bear, Rupert.
The Reds left Providence in 1977 to become the Binghamton Dusters. The franchise would eventually relocate again in 1997 to Hartford and become the Wolf Pack — one of the Bruins’ opponents on RI Comic Con Weekend.
The next edition of the Rhode Island Comic Con takes place November 1 to 3, 2024, at the Rhode Island Convention Center and Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence.
