Not only are the uniforms slightly different than their meeting in Super Bowl LIV, the field design for Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers is different, as well.
The natural grass field, which sits on a retractable tray and will be rolled into Allegiant Stadium on game day, prominently displays the NFL shield at midfield, just as it was for 44 of the first 57 Super Bowls.
In Super Bowl LIV, however, the shield was included in the NFL’s 100th anniversary logo, which also appeared on the collar of Kansas City and San Francisco’s jerseys for the entire 2019-20 season.
Meanwhile, the logo for Super Bowl LVIII, which combines the Lombardi Trophy and Roman numerals with buildings along the Las Vegas Strip in a purple, red and silver color scheme, has been placed at the 25-yard lines.
Another difference lies in the end zones, where the Chiefs will have red wordmark and their primary logo against a gold background, while the 49ers will have their primary logo and wordmark against a red background.
In Super Bowl LIV, San Francisco’s end zone featured a throwback helmet logo and a gold wordmark. This time, though, it is mostly with a gold outline, matching the design used in the 49ers’ first two playoff games.
Kansas City has used a gold end zone in all five of its previous Super Bowl appearances, including this exact design in wins over the 49ers in LIV and Philadelphia Eagles in LVII and a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in LV.
San Francisco has also used a red end zone in its seven previous Super Bowl appearances, but this will be the first time the wordmark is red and outlined in gold. It was mostly gold in all but XLVII, when it was primarily white.
