The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to become the eighth NFL franchise with back-to-back Super Bowl victories when they take on the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday night (6:30 p.m. ET on CBS).

With a win, the Chiefs would join the Green Bay Packers (I and II), Miami Dolphins (VII and VIII), Pittsburgh Steelers (IX and X, XIII and XIV), 49ers (XXIII and XXIV), Dallas Cowboys (XXVII and XXVIII), Denver Broncos (XXXII and XXXIII) and New England Patriots (XXXVIII and XXXIX) in accomplishing that feat.

San Francisco, meanwhile, is hoping to avenge a loss to Kansas City in Super Bowl LIV and capture its sixth championship, which would tie the franchise with the Patriots and Steelers for the most Super Bowl titles in NFL history. It would also be the 49ers’ first since the 1994 season.

With that, we’ve decided to take a look back at the Chiefs and 49ers’ Super Bowl appearances with graphics from our friends at The Gridiron Uniform Database, who have tracked every Super Bowl matchup and field design, in addition to the complete uniform history of the league dating back to 1920.

The Chiefs are 2-1 in the Super Bowl while wearing red helmets, red jerseys and white pants and 1-1 in white jerseys, including 1-0 with red pants and 0-1 with white pants. They notably wore red jerseys despite being the designated road team in Super Bowl LV after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to wear white.

The 49ers are also 2-1 in the Super Bowl while wearing gold helmets, white jerseys and gold pants, like they will on Sunday. They are 2-1 in gold helmets, red jerseys and gold pants and 1-0 in gold helmets, red jerseys and white pants, as they wore 1955-inspired throwback uniforms as part of the NFL’s 75th anniversary in 1994.

That said, aside from upgrades in templates and other smaller details, as well as a brief period in the late-1990s to early-2000s where the 49ers added black drop shadow numbers and black stripes to their helmets and pants, the Chiefs and 49ers’ uniforms have remained largely unchanged during the Super Bowl era.
