Liverpool FC Pays Homage to Treble-Winning 1984 Squad With 2024-25 Home Kit

English Premier League giants Liverpool FC are paying tribute to one of the club’s most successful squads of the past with their new home kit for 2024-25, made by Nike.

Liverpool unveiled the kits on their website and social media channels on Thursday, May 2. Its traditional red base features a pattern of yellow pinstripes on the front and back that spell out “YWNA,” which is shorthand for the club’s motto, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

The broad white collar has a red stripe bordered in yellow running through the middle, which is “a nod to the iconic collar worn by the [1984] team led by Joe Fagan, who lifted the European Cup in Rome that year … to complete a treble” that also included the English First Division title and the League Cup.

The club crest and Nike logo on the chest are yellow, while the logo of sponsor Standard Chartered is white. The side panels of the jersey are red with white and yellow swoops. The sleeve cuffs are solid red.

“I’m a big fan of our new kit for next season and love the fact we’re bringing the retro vibe back,” said men’s team captain Virgil van Dijk. “We are a club built on history and the 1984 team was one of our most successful ever. I’m sure our fans will appreciate the nod to those club legends.”

“It’s such a different look for the new season, and we can’t wait to wear it,” added women’s team vice-captain Taylor Hinds. “The retro inspiration always makes you feel a part of the club’s history is with you as you play.”

The shorts that go with the new home kit are also red, with yellow logos and tapering yellow and white inserts on the red side panels. The socks are red with a stripe mirroring the collar around the shins. They have yellow Nike logos on the front and “LFC” monograms on the back.

Liverpool also unveiled a new black goalkeeper kit for 2024-25 on Thursday. The shirt and shorts are covered in a tonal ripple pattern. The crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are solid black, while the grey side panels match the tone in the ripple pattern.

Liverpool have two home matches remaining in the 2023-24 Premier League season, and it’s likely they’ll wear these new kits for at least one of those. They host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, May 5, and then close out the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, May 19.

These kits may be the last that Nike manufacture for Liverpool for a while. Reports last week suggested that the club will sign a new contract with Adidas starting in 2025. Adidas also supplied Liverpool’s kits from 1985 to 1996 and from 2006 to 2012.
