Green is the Color: CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders Unveil ‘Rider Nation’ Alternate Uniform

When Saskatchewan Roughriders fans sing “Green is the Color,” they mean it. And now the team itself has doubled — even tripled — down on that with new alternate uniforms.

The Canadian Football League team unveiled their new “Rider Nation” alternate uniforms on Thursday, May 30, and will wear them for two of their nine home regular season games in the 2024 season.

The main attraction of the new alternates is a new logo that appears on the helmets, the sleeves and on the right knee of the pants. It’s an italicized S with a stalk of wheat running through the middle. The bottom half is the Riders’ usual shade of green, while the top half is a new, lighter shade the team is calling “emerald green.”

The jersey is solid obsidian green with no striping on the sleeves or collar. The new S logo appears on each sleeve. “SASKATCHEWAN” is spelled out across the chest in emerald green, and the numbers on the front and back are Rider green with emerald green outlines. Names on the back are set in an emerald green block font.

The helmets, meanwhile, also use obsidian green as their base color. The new S logo appears on each side, while an emerald green wheat stalk going from back to front serves as the stripe down the middle of the helmet.

Our new uniform is bold, powerful, and energetic. Worn on occasion as an alternate to our home, away and retro uniforms—this Obsidian spin on the Green & White is a dynamic symbol of the differing ways in which the people of this province and their team work hard to get the job done.

All in all, the new S matches up with what the Roughriders filed with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office in 2002, and the uniforms match up fairly well with a mockup done by Piffles Podcast contributor Greg McCulloch based on focus groups the Riders held a few years ago.

It’s been speculated that the uniforms could make their debut on Friday, July 19, against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Riders recently announced their home game themes for the 2024 season, and that game will be dubbed “Green Is The Colour” night.

The Roughriders open their 2024 CFL regular season with a visit to Edmonton to take on the Elks on Saturday, June 8. Their home opener comes eight days later when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
