Portland Sea Dogs to play as Maine Lobster Bakes

The Double-A Portland Sea Dogs will pay tribute to one of their home state’s oldest and largest industries when they play as the Maine Lobster Bakes later this season. Per the team, the state of Maine harvests more than 100 million pounds of lobster every year—roughly 90 percent of the nation’s supply.

The Maine Lobster Bakes identity, created by Ted Seavey of Seaboard Studios, is highlighted by a surly lobster character who can best be described as steamed, sitting in a pot surrounded by the traditional accoutrements of the lobster bake. The jerseys are red (of course) evoking a traditional white lobster bib around the neck. An alternate logo on the left sleeve features the slogan, “Buoys of Summer Portland, Maine.”

“Lobster is without a doubt Maine’s most iconic food item…when you think of Maine, you think of lobster,” said Sea Dogs President & General Manager Geoff Iacuessa. “We wanted to create a theme night that honored Maine’s most famous delicacy and the Mainers who have dedicated their lives to this industry that is vital to our economy.”

Lobster Bakes are a long-standing tradition in New England (one that your author just experienced for the first time on a recent trip to the New Hampshire seacoast), “inspired by an ancient indigenous custom of cooking clams and lobsters in sand pits,” the team said in a statement. Traditionally, lobster bakes include lobster, clams, corn on the cob, potatoes, and blueberry cake.

The Sea Dogs, an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox in the Double-A Eastern League, will play as the Maine Lobster Bakes August 23.
