Atlético de Madrid Pays Homage to Double-Winning Squad – Plus Other Recent European Kit Unveilings

Perennial Spanish La Liga contenders Atlético de Madrid are channeling an historic accomplishment from nearly 30 years ago as they look ahead to their 2024-25 season.

Atlético unveiled their 2024-25 home kits made by Nike on their website and social media channels on Thursday, July 11. They pay homage to the 1995-96 squad that won both the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey.

Atlético’s traditional red and white vertical stripes are adorned with blurry blue borders, and fading stripes within the stripes alternate between red and blue.

The back of the jersey has a solid red panel for names and numbers. The foldover collar is blue, while the sleeves have the same stripes as the front of the shirt and solid red cuffs.

The new home kit marks the return of the club’s old crest to the left chest. In June 2023, fans voted overwhelmingly in favor of the change. The old crest will also be used in the Estadio Metropolitano, on signage, on the club’s digital channels, in video games starting this 2024-25 season.

Atlético will play three preseason friendlies before kicking off their 2024-25 La Liga season on Monday, August 19, with a visit to Villarreal CF.

🇪🇸 ATHLETIC BILBAO – Home

Your eyes don’t deceive you — it’s another Spanish team with red and white stripes. This time, it’s Athletic Bilbao with their new home kits for 2024-25, made by Castore. The embossed pattern visible in the red stripes “incorporates shapes and elements of an architecture that symbolises a whole philosophy of life,” according to the club’s website. “The trace of the blades, squares and triangles present on the façade and interior of the palace is latent when you focus on the texture of the colours of the new shirt. It is a tribute to a building that faithfully reflects the uniqueness of the Club in the world of football.”

🇪🇸 RC CELTA DE VIGO – Away

Elsewhere in Spain, RC Celta de Vigo’s new away kit for 2024-25, made by Hummel, is a tribute to their home city of Vigo. The navy blue shirt features light blue accents on the collarbones, side panels and sleeve cuff trim — a nod to the club’s traditional home kit color — that also incorporates the silhouettes of five iconic Vigo landmarks: the Rande Bridge, the Pazo Quiñones de León in Castrelos, the Alcabre lighthouse, Chapel of A Guía and the Berbés arcades. The club crest is rendered in monochromatic orange, along with the crew neck collar, shoulder chevrons and Hummel logo on the chest.

CRYSTAL PALACE – AWAY

While Premier League side Crystal Palace’s 2024-25 home kit had several small eagles incorporated into its red and blue stripes, the English club’s away kit, made by Macron, features one large tonal eagle on the front of the yellow shirt. On the chest, the club has isolated the eagle and ball from its primary crest and rendered it in blue and yellow. The collar and sleeve cuffs are blue with yellow and red trim.

🇫🇷 MONTPELLIER HSC – Home

French Ligue 1 side Montpellier HSC celebrate their 50th anniversary with their new 2024-25 home kits, made by Nike. The kits are navy blue with orange sleeves and an orange chevron at the collarbones. The left chest features a special 50th anniversary crest, while the Nike logo on the right chest is navy blue with an orange outline. The back of the shirt is solid navy blue with “ICI C’EST LA PALLAIDE,” the title of a song sung by club supporters, on the back collar.

🇩🇪 RB LEIPZIG – Away

German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig have switched kit suppliers for 2024-25, and this away kit is the first effort with new partner Puma. The kit mostly a darker shade of red, with lighter and darker red brush strokes running diagonally across the front and sleeves. The collar is bright red with a darker red insert at the front. The back name-and-number panel is solid dark red, and the logos on the front, including the club crest, are white.

🇩🇪 WERDER BREMEN – Home

German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen are drawing inspiration from their home city’s flag for their 2024-25 home kit, made by Hummel. The club has taken Bremen’s city flag, rotated it and changed the colors to shades of green for the pattern on the front of the shirt. An embossed chevron pattern covers the entire shirt, which is a feature found on many of Hummel’s 2024-25 club kits. The raglan sleeves are solid dark green, while white side panels subtly slant toward the front of the shirt.

🇩🇪 FC AUGSBURG – Home

Fellow Bundesliga side FC Augsburg is attempting to capture the “splendour of the renaissance” with their 2024-25 Mizuno home kits. The off-white kit has red and green pinstripes running diagonally across the front of the shirt. In between the pinstripes is a tonal floral pattern, “as was ubiquitous during the renaissance,” that also includes the pine cone found in the club’s crest. Red and green pinstripes also run through the middle of the sleeve cuffs.

🇮🇹 HELLAS VERONA – Home

Like Atlético de Madrid, Italian Serie A side Hellas Verona is also reaching back into its history for the inspiration for its 2024-25 home kit, made by Joma. The kit honors the 1984-85 Hellas Verona squad, which is the only time a team from a non-regional capital city has won the scudetto in a single-round Serie A season. The base of the shirt is blue, with yellow pinstripes on the front, back and sleeves. The V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs are solid yellow.

🇮🇹 SS LAZIO – Third

Serie A side SS Lazio captures the heartbeat of their club and their fanbase with their 2024-25 third kit, made by Mizuno. The black kit has the club’s retro crest in light “azure blue” on the chest, and light blue outlines of hexagonal shapes radiate out from it to cover the entire front of the shirt. Light blue stripes also run through the black sleeve cuffs.
