Newcastle’s Nod to ’90s Away Kit Headlines Unveilings From England, Germany, Italy

Four out of the five major top-flight domestic soccer leagues in Europe kick off their 2024-25 seasons this weekend, so there are still some kit unveilings trickling through before teams take the pitch. Here’s a look at some of the kits launched in the past few days:

NEWCASTLE UNITED – Away

English Premier League side Newcastle United gives a nod to the ’90s with their away kit for 2024-25, made by Adidas. The navy blue and burgundy horizontal stripes are a classic design that the club wore in 1995-96, the first year of the club’s previous stint with Adidas as their kit supplier, which lasted until 2010. The crew neck collar and shoulder stripes are white, and the club crest is rendered in navy blue and white.

FULHAM – Third

Fellow Premier League side Fulham is going incognito with their 2024-25 third kit, made by Adidas. The front of the purple shirt features a “striking multi-layered camo print in an exciting mix of purple and blues,” according to the club’s website. The raglan sleeves and side panels are solid purple. The club crest is rendered in purple and white, while the crew neck collar is purple and the Adidas shoulder stripes are white.

WEST HAM UNITED – Third

Premier League club West Ham United celebrates both their own heritage and that of their kit supplier Umbro with their 2024-25 third kit. The English sportswear company celebrates their 100th anniversary this year, and the predominantly white kit features their classic double diamond logo woven into the fabric along with West Ham’s stylized hammer symbol. The polo collar is claret with a gold insert and the front, and the sleeve cuffs are claret with gold trim.

🇩🇪 EINTRACHT FRANKFURT – Away

Over in Germany, Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt will be decked out in black and red away from home in 2024-25. Their new away kit, made by Nike, is predominantly black, with red accents on the side panels, sleeve cuffs and collarbones. The club crest stands out on the left chest in white and red.

🇩🇪 BORUSSIA MÖNCHENGLADBACH – Third

Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach puts a new twist — literally — on traditional design elements with their third kit for 2024-25. The base of the shirt is solid black with silver sponsor logos and club crest. The collar and sleeve cuffs also have a silver twisting pattern woven into the fabric.

🇩🇪 FC ST. PAULI – Third

Fellow Bundesliga side FC St. Pauli wears its pride on its sleeve — and elsewhere — with its third kit for 2024-25, made by Puma. The black kit features side panels with a rainbow gradient pattern in the side panels. The club crest also features a rainbow gradients, “[underlining] the club’s support for diversity and tolerance.” The crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are purple.

🇮🇹 EMPOLI FC – Home, Away and Third

Italian Serie A side Empoli FC have brought out their entire wardrobe at once, unveiling their home, away and third kits made by Kappa at the same time earlier this week. The home kit retains Empoli’s traditional blue color but adds lime green accents including sponsor logos and the club crest. The predominantly white away kit features a grey marble graphic “inspired by the facade of the Collegiata di Sant’Andrea, one of the main historical symbols of the city of Empoli, and bright green inserts.” The third kit is inspired by the lion-shaped fountains in the Piazza dei Leoni (Square of the Lions) in the center of Empoli. “Developed on a vast array of grey tones, the graphic is inspired by the lion’s scratch and stands out for the presence of bold fuchsia details,” the club says on its website (translated to English by Google).

🇮🇹 TORINO FC – Away

Like Newcastle, Italian Serie A side Torino FC also harken back to the 1990s with their away kit for 2024-25, made by Joma. The white kit feature a maroon chevron pattern on the abdomen that is almost identical to the one Torino wore on its away kits in 1992-93, when they won the Coppa Italia over AS Roma on away goals in a two-legged final. The polo collar is maroon with white striping at the front, and the sleeve cuffs and sponsor logos are maroon.

🇮🇹 UDINESE CALCIO – Away

Another 1990s throwback away kit comes courtesy of Serie A side Udinese Calcio and supplier Macron. The predominantly yellow kit features an embossed graphic of wavy horizontal bands all over. The collar is solid navy blue, and the sleeve cuffs are navy blue with a silver stripe. Striping on the shoulders is navy blue and silver, and a silver stripe runs across the back hem.
