2025 College Football Playoff National Championship Uniform Preview

A new champion will be crowned this evening when Notre Dame and Ohio State meet in the College Football Playoff National Championship, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

This marks the ninth all-time meeting between two of the winningest programs in college football history, with the Buckeyes winning six straight games in a series that dates back to 1935, including a pair of Fiesta Bowl victories in 2006 and 2016.

It also marks the third straight season in which Notre Dame and Ohio State meet on the gridiron, as the Buckeyes beat the Fighting Irish in Columbus in 2022 before capturing a thrilling victory in South Bend on the final play of the game in 2023.

This year’s game won’t be a visual repeat of their most recent meeting, however, as Ohio State wore its standard road uniforms and Notre Dame wore gold helmets with new green alternate jerseys and pants.

The Fighting Irish will instead wear their standard home uniforms in tonight’s matchup, including gold helmets, blue jerseys and gold pants. The jerseys notably include gold names on the back, something the program adds each postseason.

The Buckeyes are also breaking out the road version of their “Heritage Stripes” throwback uniforms for the title game after wearing their scarlet “Color Rush” set, standard home and standard road looks in the previous rounds.

This is a departure from past playoff appearances, as Nike no longer provides new uniforms for each of its playoff participants now that the field has expanded from four to 12 teams and now only give them to programs that reach the title game.

A new feature of the uniforms this season is the gold Nike Swoosh, which now matches the College Football Playoff’s branding rather than the Diamond Quest design that was inspired by the crystal football given to the champion during the BCS era.

Ohio State is 1-1 in the national championship in this uniform design, beating Miami (Florida) in 2003 and falling to Alabama in 2021, while Notre Dame is 0-1 in the title game in blue jerseys, as they also lost to the Crimson Tide in 2013.
