To celebrate their long-standing affiliation with the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, the Wheeling Nailers are trotting out one of their parent club’s most famous (infamous?) jersey designs.
The West Virginia ECHL team unveiled the jerseys on their social media channels on Thursday, February 6, and will wear them on Pittsburgh Penguins Night on Saturday, February 8, against the Reading Royals.
The jerseys are almost an exact replica of the “RoboPenguin” jerseys that the Penguins first introduced as a third jersey in 1995, then wore as their full time road jersey from 1997 to 2002. The base of the jersey is black, with a gradient gold stripe coming out from behind the Nailers’ logo on the right side of the chest and a grey stripe with white pinstripes inside on the left side of the chest.

Those stripes continue around to the back of the jersey, where they merge together under the player’s number, which is white with black and gold outlines. Names on the back are one-color white.

The shoulders feature triangular grey panels with gold pinstripes running through them. The right cuff has angled gold and white stripes above a grey panel, while the left cuff has a grey panel with white pinstripes through them.

The jerseys were pictured in Thursday’s announcement with black helmets, black gloves and solid black socks. The pants mimic those worn by the Penguins today, with a black base, a tapering gold stripe outlined in white, and the Pens’ skating penguin logo on the right leg.

Game-worn jerseys are being auctioned off online through Handbid, with bids open until 9 p.m. ET on Saturday, February 8.
Along with the jerseys, Nailers fans will have the chance to meet Penguins legend and two-time Stanley Cup champions Kevin Stevens on Pittsburgh Penguins Night. Puck drop on Saturday at the WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia, is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET.
