Boise State Broncos Considering Blue Turf For Softball Field

The Boise State Broncos gained national recognition when they installed blue turf at their football stadium in 1986, and now nearly 40 years later, they’re considering expanding their trademark look to the softball field.

According to public records obtained by BoiseDev, the Boise State athletic department asked FieldTurf – which installed the current surface at Albertsons Stadium in 2019 – for quotes for two separate projects.

One project would be the replacement of the current turf, which has discoloration in the orange end zones, while the other would be to swap the grass field at Huber Field at Dona Larsen Park for blue turf with the school’s bronco head logo in center field.

The completion of the two projects, which would reportedly cost between $1.3 and $1.5 million, could happen at the same time next year, though a final decision on the color of the turf that will be used at softball stadium has not been made.

That said, this isn’t the first time the Broncos have explored the idea of using a blue playing surface in another sport, as the basketball program briefly considered switching to a blue court in 2013 before ultimately deciding on a traditional two-tone wood design.
