NFL Revises Alternate, Throwback Uniform Policy To Allow For Additional Use, Combinations

Denver Broncos president Damani Leech revealed during the NFL’s annual owners meetings on Monday that teams will now be able to wear alternate and/or throwback uniforms as many as four times beginning with the 2025 season.

“We just refreshed the policy, so now we’ll be able to wear the uniforms four times during the regular season,” Leech said. “That will be great. More opportunity to wear the throwbacks, but also more versatility with the helmets.

“So, as an example, we can wear our white helmets with orange-on-orange pants and jerseys. Things like that will just add more flexibility to the closet and hopefully be exciting for the players, but also for the fans.”

Teams were previously restricted to wearing their alternate and/or throwback uniforms up to three times per season and could only wear their second helmets with an alternate or corresponding throwback uniform.

For example, the Broncos wore their “Orange Crush” throwback uniforms twice and their white alternate helmets with their navy blue alternate jerseys and pants once last season, maxing out the number of opportunities.

But with every team in the league now permitted to introduce a third shell this fall after initially restricting it to teams that underwent a redesign in 2024, it makes sense for the league to relax those rules and allow for additional combinations.

“I think the cadence of our games of once a week allows them to have a sense of weight and specialness to them, which is exciting,” Leech said. “I think the fans love it and get excited about what the players are wearing that particular week.”

That said, it appears that Leech will push for the league to relax its uniform policy even further in the future, potentially paving the way for teams to be able to wear alternate or throwback uniforms in the postseason.

“I’m just happy with the vote we just got,” Leech said. “I’ll take that win for now and maybe in the future, we’ll get a little more flexibility.”

Along those lines, multiple sources have indicated that teams can also now wear alternate pants in the playoffs after previously being restricted to their home and road designs in the postseason, though the Super Bowl will continue to feature teams in their primary designs.
