Buffalo Bills COO Teases Return Of 1990s Throwback Uniforms Alongside New Stadium

The Buffalo Bills are one of just five NFL teams that do not have an alternate or throwback helmet at their disposal, wearing the same white shell and decals with their home blue, white road and red alternate uniforms.

But when asked about the possibility of the Bills adding to their uniform closet in the near future during his media availability at the NFL annual owners meetings earlier this week, chief operating officer Pete Guelli acknowledged that may soon change.

“I’ve been involved in a lot of uniform projects and it doesn’t surprise me anymore how excited people get about that,” Guelli told team sideline reporter Sal Capaccio. “We’re looking at some things relative to that first year, the opening of the (new Highmark) Stadium.

“Nothing I can disclose at this point, but – you know – I’m invested in the uniforms. It’s a huge part of our brand. I know how much that resonates with our fans, so it’s something that we’re all focused on.”

Whether that means a full-on redesign of Buffalo’s current look, which was introduced in 2011 as a nod to the 1975-83 uniforms, or the addition of 1987-2001 throwback uniforms, which would be complete with red helmets.

Those uniforms have seen more success than any other design in franchise history, too, as the Bills made four consecutive Super Bowl appearances (all losses) from the 1990 to the 1993 seasons and 10 playoff appearances during their 15-year run.

Aside from the red helmets, which featured white facemasks and their “Charging Buffalo” logo on the sides, the uniforms were pretty simple. Buffalo wore blue home jerseys with white block numbers and a red-white-red striping pattern on the collar and cuffs, as well as white pants with blue and red stripes down the sides and red socks.

The franchise likely won’t introduce the white road version, though, as teams are only permitted to have four different jerseys in their closet and they would have to scrap the aforementioned red alternate to make room. They notably featured blue numbers and a red-blue-red striping pattern on the collar and cuffs.

That said, the other four teams without an alternate or throwback helmets are the Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers. The Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers, meanwhile, use the same shell for their standard and alternate/or throwback designs.
