All Players Wearing #42, Cap Patches Today in Celebration of Jackie Robinson Day in Baseball

Major League Baseball will commemorate Jackie Robinson Day today, continuing an annual tradition that began league-wide in 2004. Every player, coach, manager, and umpire is wearing Robinson’s number 42 and a new Robinson-themed patch on the side of their caps.

As in previous years, all teams will wear the number 42 in royal blue using a block-style font on the back of their jerseys. This design remains consistent across all clubs, regardless of team colours or uniform templates, and replicates the look Robinson wore with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.

The new 2025 cap patch shows a royal blue “42” set within a white baseball diamond trimmed in gold. Below the number is a gold banner reading “BREAKING BARRIERS.”

You may notice a few teams wearing designs slightly different from their usual cap designs—the Athletics, Orioles, and Guardians are all wearing different visor colours, which are typically paired with that crown. I have no explanation for this, honestly. Whenever I ask why a team did something like this, the official answer I get is typically something to the effect of “because that’s what they wanted.”

Under the visor of each cap is Jackie Robinson’s signature, stitched in silver on a green field.

Batting practice shirts with “Breaking Barriers” will be worn during pre-game warmups, special base jewels will be inserted into on-field bases, lineup cards will feature the Jackie Robinson Day logo, and those players (heroes) who still rock the high socks will be wearing a pair of royal blues with the number 42.

In addition to the on-field tributes, MLB will coordinate several league-wide community events through its MLB Together platform. This includes volunteer activities in collaboration with Henry Street Settlement, a youth baseball event at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, Florida, and educational programming for children.

Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s colour barrier when he made his Major League debut on April 15, 1947, playing first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. He played ten seasons with the Dodgers, was named Rookie of the Year in 1947, was selected to six All-Star Games, and was named the National League Most Valuable Player in 1949. Robinson played in six World Series and helped the Dodgers win the championship in 1955. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.

In 1997, on the 50th anniversary of his debut, Major League Baseball retired Robinson’s number 42 across all 30 clubs, the first time a number had been retired league-wide in a professional sports league. The number 42 has not been issued to any player since, except on April 15 of each season, when all players wear it in unison. That practice began in 2009, two years after Ken Griffey Jr. requested and received permission from the Robinson family to wear the number in honour of the date.

All teams will wear blue 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers-style numbers regardless of their usual colours and designs

MLB first introduced the current Jackie Robinson Day logo in 2022 to mark the 75th anniversary of Robinson’s début. The design features Robinson in a batting stance with a red 42 on the front of his uniform, set against a blue and bronze background. MLB Creative Director of Brand Design Jason Yeadon worked with Todd Radom, who also created the 50th anniversary logo in 1997, and designer Britt Davis. MLB consulted the Robinson family throughout the design process. Upon its release three years ago, we covered the details of that design in-depth; you can check that out here.
