The Houston Cougars baseball program recently joined the football, basketball, softball, golf and volleyball teams in unveiling new “Houston Blue” alternate uniforms, which will debut on May 15 against Arizona after their May 6 game against Texas A&M was cancelled due to inclement weather.
The football uniforms were initially perceived as a nod to the NFL’s Houston Oilers, but after the league and the Tennessee Titans sent a cease-and-desist letter to the athletic department for their use of the classic colour scheme, but school doubled down on its connection to the city.
“As a university deeply connected to the fabric of Houston, incorporating ‘Houston Blue’ into our uniforms is a powerful way to celebrate the city’s rich history,” athletic director Eddie Nuñez said at the time. “From iconic blue street markers to the Houston Police Department’s signature blue police cars and helicopters, this colour holds a special place in the hearts of Houstonians.”
Like the football, basketball, softball, golf and volleyball uniforms, the Nike baseball uniforms feature a “Houston Blue” jersey with a white script “Houston” wordmark outlined in red across the chest, though the matching white numbers are off center. There’s also Texas state flag on the right sleeve and a Big XII logo on the left sleeve.
The “Houston Blue” hat prominently displays the interlocking “UH” logo in red on a white front panel and includes a “Houston Blue” brim and a red squatchee and eyelets, while the uniform is complete with white pants that appear to have a thick red stripe running down the sides and a red belt.
Houston fields 17 varsity programs, so this likely won’t be the last instance where the Cougars introduce “Houston Blue” uniforms. It will be interesting to see if the athletic department eventually adds it to their official colour scheme in the near future or if it continues to be used sparingly.
