Nebraska Cornhuskers Install New, Temporary Turf At Memorial Stadium

The Nebraska Cornhuskers football program unveiled a new turf design for Memorial Stadium this week, though it will only be used for a few seasons before it is eventually replaced with natural grass.

The temporary surface is the result of ongoing renovations at Memorial Stadium, which includes the demolition and reconstruction of the south stands and changes along the west sideline of the stadium that should be completed in time for the 2028 season.

“A lot of the stadium work will have to be done from the inside, (so) the idea of putting grass in there and tearing it up just isn’t too appetizing,” athletic director Troy Dannen said during an appearance on the Husker Radio Network last month.

“Putting a good turf surface in, turf that can be rolled up to bring equipment in and then rolled back in that transitional phrase.”

The new surface features a larger Block “N” logo at midfield and red end zones with white “Nebraska” and “Huskers” wordmarks outlined in black. There’s also a red out-of-bounds area from the 20-yard line inward, “Tom Osborne Field” written on opposing sidelines and black team areas.

It replaces a simpler design, which was installed in 2022 and featured grass-colored end zone with red wordmarks outlined in white, matching the logo at midfield. The playing field was also surrounded entirely by a white out-of-bounds area.

The Cornhuskers’ new surface, known as Hellas Matrix Helix, is currently used at five NFL stadiums, including AT&T Stadium (Dallas Cowboys), Lucas Oil Stadium (Indianapolis Colts), Nissan Stadium (Tennessee Titans), NRG Stadium (Houston Texas) and SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles Chargers and Rams).

Nebraska has notably used an artificial surface at Memorial Stadium since 1970, when they switched from grass to AstroTurf. The Cornhuskers also installed a matching turf field at their indoor practice facility, the Hawks Championship Center, and replaced the outdoor fields with natural grass this offseason.
